  1. a. 1 Timothy 3:2, 6; Ephesians 4:8–11; Hosea 4:6; Malachi 2:7; 2 Corinthians 3:6

    1 Timothy 3:2; 1 Timothy 3:6

3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

3:2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3:6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same condemnation as the devil.

    Ephesians 4:8–11

    4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. 4:9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

4:8 This is why it says: "When He ascended on high, He led captives away, and gave gifts to men." 4:9 What does "He ascended" mean, except that He also descended to the lower parts of the earth? 4:10 He who descended is the very One who ascended above all the heavens, in order to fill all things. 4:11 And it was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,

    Hosea 4:6

4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you as My priests. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.

    Malachi 2:7

2:7 For the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts.

2:7 For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, because he is the messenger of the LORD of Hosts.

    2 Corinthians 3:6

3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

3:6 And He has qualified us as ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

  2. b. Jeremiah 14:15; Romans 10:15; Hebrews 5:4; 1 Corinthians 12:28–29; 1 Timothy 3:10; 4:14; 5:22

    Jeremiah 14:15

14:15 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.

14:15 Therefore this is what the LORD says about the prophets who prophesy in My name: I did not send them, yet they say, 'No sword or famine will touch this land.' By sword and famine these very prophets will meet their end!

    Romans 10:15

10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

10:15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"

    Hebrews 5:4

5:4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

5:4 No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God, just as Aaron was.

    1 Corinthians 12:28–29

12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. 12:29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?

12:28 And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, and those with gifts of healing, helping, administration, and various tongues. 12:29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?

    1 Timothy 3:10

3:10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

3:10 Additionally, they must first be tested. Then, if they are above reproach, let them serve as deacons.

    1 Timothy 4:14

4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

4:14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given you through the prophecy spoken over you at the laying on of the hands of the elders.

    1 Timothy 5:22

5:22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.

5:22 Do not be too quick in the laying on of hands and thereby share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.
