Question 68

Are the elect only effectually called?

All the elect, and they only, are effectually called;a although others may be, and often are, outwardly called by the ministry of the word,b and have some common operations of the Spirit;c who, for their wilful neglect and contempt of the grace offered to them, being justly left in their unbelief, do never truly come to Jesus Christ.d

13:48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

  3. c. Matthew 7:22; Hebrews 6:4–6

    Matthew 7:22

7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

7:22 Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?'

    Hebrews 6:4–6

6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 6:5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6:6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

6:4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 6:5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age- 6:6 and then have fallen away-to be restored to repentance, because they themselves are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting Him to open shame.

  4. d. John 12:38–40; Acts 28:25–27; John 6:64–65; Psalm 81:11–12

    John 12:38–40

12:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? 12:39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 12:40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

12:38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" 12:39 For this reason they were unable to believe. For again, Isaiah says: 12:40 "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they cannot see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them."

    Acts 28:25–27

28:25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, 28:26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: 28:27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

28:25 They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: "The Holy Spirit was right when He spoke to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet: 28:26 'Go to this people and say, "You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving." 28:27 For this people's heart has grown callous; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.'

    John 6:64–65

6:64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. 6:65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

6:64 However, there are some of you who do not believe." (For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray Him.) 6:65 Then Jesus said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has granted it to him."

    Psalm 81:11–12

81:11 But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me. 81:12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: and they walked in their own counsels.

81:11 But My people would not listen to Me, and Israel would not obey Me. 81:12 So I gave them up to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.
