Question 77
Wherein do justification and sanctification differ?
Although sanctification be inseparably joined with justification,a yet they differ, in that God in justification imputeth the righteousness of Christ;b in sanctification his Spirit infuseth grace, and enableth to the exercise thereof;c in the former, sin is pardoned;d in the other, it is subdued:e the one doth equally free all believers from the revenging wrath of God, and that perfectly in this life, that they never fall into condemnation;f the other is neither equal in all,g nor in this life perfect in any,h but growing up to perfection.i

4:6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, 4:8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
4:6 And David speaks likewise of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: 4:8 Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him."

6:6 We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, that we should no longer be slaves to sin. 6:14 For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

f. Romans 8:33–34
Romans 8:33–34
8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
8:33 Who will bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 8:34 Who is there to condemn us? For Christ Jesus, who died, and more than that was raised to life, is at the right hand of God-and He is interceding for us.

g. 1 John 2:12–14; Hebrews 5:12–14
1 John 2:12–14
2:12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake. 2:13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. 2:14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
2:12 I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven through His name. 2:13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father. 2:14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
Hebrews 5:12–14
5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 5:13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
5:12 Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to reteach you the basic principles of God's word. You need milk, not solid food! 5:13 For everyone who lives on milk is still an infant, inexperienced in the message of righteousness. 5:14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil.

1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1:10 If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word is not in us.

i. 2 Corinthians 7:1; Philippians 3:12–14
2 Corinthians 7:1
7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
7:1 Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Philippians 3:12–14
3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
3:12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 3:13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 3:14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize of God's heavenly calling in Christ Jesus.
