    Are all they saved who hear the gospel, and live in the church?

    All that hear the gospel, and live in the visible church, are not saved; but they only who are true members of the church invisible.a

      John 12:38–40

      12:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? 12:39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 12:40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

      12:38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" 12:39 For this reason they were unable to believe. For again, Isaiah says: 12:40 "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they cannot see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them."
