Question 95
Of what use is the moral law to all men?
The moral law is of use to all men, to inform them of the holy nature and will of God,a and of their duty, binding them to walk accordingly;b to convince them of their disability to keep it, and of the sinful pollution of their nature, hearts, and lives;c to humble them in the sense of their sin and misery,d and thereby help them to a clearer sight of the need they have of Christ,e and of the perfection of his obedience.f

a. Leviticus 11:44–45; 20:7–8; Romans 7:12
Leviticus 11:44–45
11:44 For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 11:45 For I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.
11:44 For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any creature that crawls along the ground. 11:45 For I am the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt so that I would be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.
Leviticus 20:7–8
20:7 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the Lord your God. 20:8 And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the Lord which sanctify you.
20:7 Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, because I am the LORD your God. 20:8 And you shall keep My statutes and practice them. I am the LORD who sanctifies you.
Romans 7:12
7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
7:12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good.

b. Micah 6:8; James 2:10–11
Micah 6:8
6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
James 2:10–11
2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. 2:11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
2:10 Whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 2:11 For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

c. Psalm 19:11–12; Romans 3:20; 7:7
Psalm 19:11–12
19:11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. 19:12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.
19:11 By them indeed Your servant is warned; in keeping them is great reward. 19:12 Who can discern his own errors? Cleanse me from my hidden faults.
Romans 3:20
3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
3:20 Therefore no one will be justified in His sight by works of the law. For the law merely brings awareness of sin.
Romans 7:7
7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
7:7 What then shall we say? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed, I would not have been mindful of sin if not for the law. For I would not have been aware of coveting if the law had not said, "Do not covet."

d. Romans 3:9, 23
Romans 3:9; Romans 3:23
3:9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
3:9 What then? Are we any better? Not at all. For we have already made the charge that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin. 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

e. Galatians 3:21–22
Galatians 3:21–22
3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
3:21 Is the law, then, opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come from the law. 3:22 But the Scripture pronounces all things confined by sin, so that by faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.
