The Baptist Catechism Set to Music
Benjamin Beddome’s Exposition
Is God the Lord?
I am the Lord, that is my name,
Is this a name betokening authority?
The Lord Most High is terrible, he is a great King,
Is it therefore an obligation upon us to keep his commands?
Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, I am the Lord,
Is he our God?
O Lord, thou art our God,
2 Chronicles 14:11
Is he so by covenant?
I entered into covenant with thee, and thou becamest mine,
And by our choice?
Ye have chosen you the Lord,
Is this a reason why we should keep his commandments?
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God, and keep his charge,
And is it a reason obligatory to Gentiles as well as Jews?
For is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yea of the Gentiles also,
Is God our Redeemer?
All flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer,
Hath he redeemed us from outward troubles?
The angel that redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads,
And from our spiritual enemies?
We are delivered out of the hands of our enemies,
And from the bondage of sin?
He shall redeem Israel from all their iniquities,
And from eternal wrath?
Who hath delivered us from the wrath to come,
1 Thessalonians 1:10
Are we then in gratitude bound to obey God?
Truly I am thy servant, I am thy servant, thou hast loosed my bonds,
And in justice?
For ye are not your own,
1 Corinthians 6:19
And are we guilty not only of horrid ingratitude, but of great impiety if we do not?
For will a man rob God?
*A national covenant being a thing peculiar to the Jewish economy; what is said under the foregoing answer can only with propriety be applied to real saints, under the gospel dispensation.
